Rio de Janeiro rail network: Know the routes and their concessions

The railroad sector is one of the main means of supplying Brazilian ports. According to data from the National Road Plan, in 2017 there were already about 30 thousand km of railroads spread over several regions of the country. At the time, the loads handled on the lines reached more than 500 million tons. The railroad lines are built and granted through a concessionary system. In other words, the government invests in construction and makes the auction for the concession of the road to a private company, which signs a periodic contract to pay the investment during this period, receiving the right to an excess profit from railroad activities.

In this article we will talk about the Rio de Janeiro rail network. Rio de Janeiro is among the most developed states in Brazil. Many economic sectors operate strongly in this state thanks to its economic importance. As the state is coastal, port actions are therefore extremely relevant. In order to supply the port and also to transport cargo and products arriving in this region, the presence of the Rio de Janeiro railroad network, which passes through the state, is essential. Currently there are two concessions and lines present in the state, MRS Logística, which connects the port of Itaguaí to São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and the Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica, which connects the port of Itaguaí to several states such as Minas Gerais , Espírito Santo, Sergipe, Goiás, Bahia and São Paulo.

To find out more about the Rio de Janeiro rail network, what products are handled, the amount of cargo, the length of the lines and to know a little more about the main port in the state of Rio de Janeiro, just continue with us. Check out!

Central Atlantic railroad (FCA)

The Centro-Atlântica railroad is a railroad network built by the privatization program, which took place in 1996, which aimed at transferring power from the public to the private sector in some areas managed by the State. Since then, FCA has undergone several modifications, as the concession contracts are periodic. Currently, it is concessioned by VLI Multimodal S / A, and is about 7,220 kilometers long, being one of the largest and also one of the most important railroad networks in Rio de Janeiro. The range of products transported is varied. According to data from the Federal Government's Investment Partnership Program, more than 27 thousand tons of items were transported, such as: soybeans, iron ore, bauxite, corn, sugar, among other commodities. The line covers around 300 municipalities in the states already mentioned.

The Rio de Janeiro railroad network, controlled by MRS Logística, operates in the Southeast Region of the country and has as main destinations the ports of Santos (SP), Itaguaí (RJ) and the central region of Minas Gerais, such as the city of Belo Horizonte. This railroad is about 1,643 km long and is a project that continues to evolve to expand its line even further. According to the website of the company MRS logistics, the company has about 16% of the railroad extension present in the country, with more than 28 thousand wagons operating in these regions. Also, according to data released by the company, the loads that are transported are the most diverse, such as containers, ores, bauxite, agricultural products, concrete blocks, among others.

Port of Itaguaí

Porto de itaguaí

The city of Itaguaí, in Rio de Janeiro, is a coastal city and has one of the main export ports for products, mainly iron ore. The Port of Itaguaí exports large quantities of miners to neighboring countries on a daily basis. This export is only allowed on account of the Rio de Janeiro rail network, which allows the displacement of cargo between the regions that make up the track path. According to the official website of the state government of Rio de Janeiro, which works with data on the state's ports, the handling capacity of the port of Itaguaí is 3,542,738 tons. Data from Web Porto pointed out that the port of Itaguaí was the third that handled cargo from January to March 2020, representing almost 10% of the total port handling in the country. The information represents a decrease compared to the same period last year, when the numbers pointed to movements above 14%.

The total volume of cargo handled at Brazilian ports reached around 84,21 million tons. Despite decreasing the volume of handling, the port of Itaguaí handled about 8 million tons of products in the first four months of the year, with one of the main supply points still occurring through the Rio de Janeiro rail network, through MRS Logística.

New project

novo projeto Malha ferroviária Rio de Janeiro

Construction of a new Rio de Janeiro rail network has been underway since mid-2015, which will interconnect the state of Rio with Espírito Santo. This railroad line is called the EF-118 and, currently, the contract is extended to 2027, being concessioned by Vale.

This project aims to supply cities such as Baixada Fluminense, Nova Iguaçu, Macaé and other cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro and will have its final destination in Vitória (ES), passing through several municipalities in the state, such as Anchieta, Cariacica, Marataízes, Guarapari and a lot more.

The size of this railroad network, according to the project presented by the Federal Government, is about 572 km long, with an investment of around R $ 7.8 billion. Currently, the largest railroad network in Rio de Janeiro, which also includes the state of Espírito Santo, is under the command of VLI Multimodal S / A and is the Centro-Atlântico railroad.

Conclusion

As we noticed throughout the article, although the extension of Rio de Janeiro is not the largest in relation to other states in the country, the economic importance that this state has for Brazil makes the presence of a vast extension of railroad lines necessary. For this reason, the government has invested a lot in recent years in the construction of the Rio de Janeiro rail network, and continues to invest so that more and more port workers in this region are supplied efficiently.
