Since the time of Juscelino Kubitschek, the main means of transport in Brazil has been the road. No wonder, about a third of the Brazilian rails are deactivated. Without having much knowledge about what this could entail for the long-term future, the Brazilian government at the time favored highways over railroads. However, due to the coffee crisis, many exports had been stopped, causing part of the railroads (administered by the private sector) indebtedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the intention of attracting automobile industries and investments to Brazil, then-President Juscelino Kubitschek created the so-called Goals Plan, whose purpose was to improve Brazilian infrastructure. Along with this, Brazil changed its federal capital to Bras\u00edlia, starting the construction of highways that would link the center of the country to the richest regions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, with several tax incentives for the automobile industries, Volkswagen, Willis Overland, Mercedes Benz and General Motors came to Brazil, starting the process of abandoning the railroads in our country. Without many environmental concerns, the automobile industries were growing too much in Brazil and spreading <a href=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/en\/ferrovias-mato-grosso\/\">throughout the country.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As JK's own motto already said, his government sought to make the country grow \u201c50 years in 5\u201d. However, as Brazil is a country of continental dimensions, the low malleability of the rail modal meant that many regions were really integrated with the rest of the country only through highways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, maintaining a railroad in good condition is more expensive than maintaining a highway. In addition, in 1957, with the end of some private concessions on the railroads in Brazil, the state-owned Rede Ferrovi\u00e1ria Federal (RFFSA) started to manage the railroads, which was also another reason for abandonment, since the country's government clearly wanted to implement \u201croad transport\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after years of neglect, some companies have resumed concessions under some railroads, causing, slowly, part of the investments in the modal to be resumed. Currently, most of the line is completely abandoned (with the exception of a small section). Currently, only the Vila Inhomirim Line, controlled by Supervia, carries passengers from Rio de Janeiro, in Mag\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malha Sul:<\/strong> Despite being privatized in 1997, Malha Sul has numerous stretches that add to the rest of the abandoned railroads in Brazil. This is because, although it is a transport with little malleability, the advantages and long-term benefits are remarkable. In Europe, for example, where the rail modal is privileged (even in the transport of passengers), by 2050 any cargo transport over a distance of more than 300 km will have to be done by road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because, while we find countless abandoned railroads in Brazil, in Europe what we see most are rails. Speaking a little more about the benefits, in addition to spending less fuel (about three times), <a href=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/en\/ferrovias-sustentaveis\/\">rail transport manages to greatly reduce the emission of carbon dioxide,<\/a>boosted by road transport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, according to ANTT (National Land Transport Agency), about 82% of pollutant emissions from Brazilian transport come from heavy trucks. At\u00e9 porque, o Brasil priorizou o modal rodovi\u00e1rio at\u00e9 no transporte de cargas, colaborando para que hoje tenhamos tantas ferrovias abandonadas no Brasil. Motivos do abandono das ferrovias Com o contexto da \u00e9poca ligeiramente resumido, o Brasil come\u00e7ou a se tornar um pa\u00eds rodovi\u00e1rio, ou seja, que foi deixando as ferrovias de lado. Ferrovia do A\u00e7o: Projetada e constru\u00edda, a Ferrovia do A\u00e7o talvez seja um dos principais exemplos de como o Brasil n\u00e3o desenvolveu suas ferrovias. Constru\u00edda na d\u00e9cada de 70, ela jamais teve um vag\u00e3o em circula\u00e7\u00e3o. No entanto, at\u00e9 hoje existem estruturas remanescentes da Ferrovia do A\u00e7o, que vem apodrecendo com o tempo. Falando um pouco mais em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos benef\u00edcios, al\u00e9m de gastar menos combust\u00edvel (cerca de tr\u00eas vezes), o transporte ferrovi\u00e1rio consegue diminuir e muito a emiss\u00e3o de g\u00e1s carb\u00f4nico, potencializada pelo modal rodovi\u00e1rio.&nbsp; Isto \u00e9, de acordo com a ANTT (Ag\u00eancia Nacional de Transportes Terrestres), cerca de 82% das emiss\u00f5es de poluentes oriundas do transporte brasileiro vem dos caminh\u00f5es pesados.
