However, its importance can increase today, as certain installations, such as the active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul, can represent a significant alternative in the Brazilian and international flow of cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the concessions granted to the road sector, which has dominated a large part of the cargo transport sector in Brazil in the last 60 years, the government has always had an important role in the rail sector, which currently transports in a set of rail networks that combined have more than 30,000 km of routes intended solely for cargo and production. In Rio Grande do Sul, where there are networks connected in the state and in adjoining countries, the network covers 3260 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as we will see later, if the appropriate measures are not taken, the State will lose the opportunity to finally resume the <a href=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/en\/ferrrovia-ou-rodovia-qual-meio-de-transporte-e-melhor\/\">railroad sector<\/a> properly and in fact use it to its full capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Panorama of active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/busy-blue-train-traveling-over-bridge-with-passeng-2021-08-29-01-08-53-utc-1.png\" alt=\"Find out which railroad are active in Rio Grande do Sul\" class=\"wp-image-3966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/busy-blue-train-traveling-over-bridge-with-passeng-2021-08-29-01-08-53-utc-1.png 500w, https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/busy-blue-train-traveling-over-bridge-with-passeng-2021-08-29-01-08-53-utc-1-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the active <a href=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/en\/primeira-ferrovia-do-brasil\/\">railroads<\/a> in Rio Grande do Sul cover around 2000 kilometers of railroad network. However, this does not represent its entirety, as more than 1200 kilometers are not in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the sector is dedicated to freight transport, as throughout the country, but trains are also a means of transporting people in the state, with the existence of the Wine Train, controlled by the local tourist company called Giordani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, a project was set up with the objective of extending the networks both internationally and in the North-South direction of the country. However, as in the rest of Brazil, active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul will continue to overcome the obstacles caused by the monopoly of highways and urban expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Main active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/railway-station-with-modern-red-passenger-train-i-2021-08-26-17-00-50-utc-1.png\" alt=\"Main active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul\" class=\"wp-image-3964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/railway-station-with-modern-red-passenger-train-i-2021-08-26-17-00-50-utc-1.png 500w, https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/railway-station-with-modern-red-passenger-train-i-2021-08-26-17-00-50-utc-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsible for 8.8% of cargo transport in 2015 in the state, the active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul have five important sections: Roca Sales \u2013 Ponta Grossa, Porto Alegre \u2013 Uruguaiana (international), Cruz Alta \u2013 Santa Maria, Cacequi \u2013 Rio Grande and Triunfo \u2013 Passo Fundo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the main products transported are: soybeans, fuels, agricultural products, sugars, products from vegetable extraction, packaging, allowances, allowances and industrialized products for civil construction such as cement. In 2019, more than 22 million useful tons of cargo were transported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rio Grande do Sul Railroad Bridges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-bridge-2021-08-30-08-47-11-utc-1.png\" alt=\"Rio Grande do Sul Railroad Bridges\" class=\"wp-image-3963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-bridge-2021-08-30-08-47-11-utc-1.png 500w, https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-bridge-2021-08-30-08-47-11-utc-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With bridges ranging from 200 to over 1500 meters, the active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul have stretches that cut through areas where even the highways cannot reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best example is the Cacequi bridge, which for a long time held the title of the longest bridge in Latin America. It belongs to the Porto Alegre \u2013 Uruguaiana stretch, it was built in the 1930s and demonstrates the potential that these bridges have for the <a href=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/en\/inovacoes-ferroviarias\/\">clean and economical transport<\/a> that the railroad can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other bridges of the active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul are: S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo \u2013 Pelotas Canal Bridge, Barreto Triunfo railroad Bridge, Pelotas River railroad Bridge \u2013 Bom Jesus, Brochado da Rocha \u2013 Mu\u00e7um Highway Bridge, Marcelino Ramos Highway Bridge, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modernization of Railroads<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-2021-08-30-05-54-35-utc-1-1.png\" alt=\"Modernization of Railroads\" class=\"wp-image-3962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-2021-08-30-05-54-35-utc-1-1.png 500w, https:\/\/massa.ind.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/train-2021-08-30-05-54-35-utc-1-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For some years now, since the last decade, there have been some attempts to get the project to expand the North-South railroads off the ground, something that would be in the interest of the entire country given the possibilities of connection and modernization of cargo transported inside and outside the country. However, due to difficulties caused by urban advancement, road blockade and privatization, there is uncertainty as to when projects like this will actually have a concrete future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the privatization of sections of the active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul, acquired by ALL (Am\u00e9rica Latina Log\u00edstica) and merged in 2013 with Rumo Log\u00edstica, and the operation called Rumo Malha Sul, which has a concession to take place until 2027, there is still no concrete project to stabilize the deactivated sections, nor an approved expansion that could redefine the sector's infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Future investments in active railroads in Rio Grande do Sul end up depending both on the private sector, which now organizes its situation, and on the government and the State, which need to understand the urgency of the concessions and reduce the bochornoso monopoly of the highways. The rail sector presents an increase in the transported load, without embargo, each year through cuts and obstacles. Por\u00e9m, como veremos mais adiante, se n\u00e3o forem tomadas as devidas medidas, o Estado perder\u00e1 a oportunidade de enfim retomar adequadamente o setor ferrovi\u00e1rio e de fato utiliz\u00e1-lo em sua total capacidade de escoamento. Panorama das ferrovias ativas no Rio Grande do Sul Atualmente as ferrovias ativas no Rio Grande do Sul cobrem por volta de 2000 quil\u00f4metros de malha ferrovi\u00e1ria. Entretanto, isso n\u00e3o representa a sua totalidade, visto que mais de 1200 quil\u00f4metros n\u00e3o est\u00e3o em uso. Grande parte do setor \u00e9 dedicada ao transporte de cargas, assim como em todo o pa\u00eds, mas os trens tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o um meio de transporte de pessoas no estado, com a exist\u00eancia do Trem do Vinho, controlado pela empresa tur\u00edstica local chamada Giordani. Em 2013, um projeto com o objetivo de prolongar as malhas tanto no sentido internacional como no sentido Norte-Sul do pa\u00eds foi proposto. Por\u00e9m, assim como no resto do Brasil, as ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul continuaram sofrendo com os entraves causados pelo monop\u00f3lio das rodovias e do ampliamento urbano. Principais Ferrovias ativas no Rio Grande do Sul Respons\u00e1vel por 8,8% do transporte de cargas em 2015 no Estado, as ferrovias ativas no Rio Grande do Sul contam com cinco trechos importantes: Roca Sales &#8211; Ponta Grossa, Porto Alegre &#8211; Uruguaiana (internacional), Cruz Alta &#8211; Santa Maria, Cacequi &#8211; Rio Grande e Triunfo &#8211; Passo Fundo.&nbsp; Entre os principais produtos transportados est\u00e3o: soja, combust\u00edveis, produtos agr\u00edcolas, a\u00e7\u00facares, produtos de extra\u00e7\u00e3o vegetal, containers, adubos, fertilizantes e produtos industrializados para constru\u00e7\u00f5es civis como cimento. Em 2019, foram transportadas mais de 22 milh\u00f5es de toneladas \u00fateis de carga. Pontes Ferrovi\u00e1rias do Rio Grande do Sul Com pontes que v\u00e3o de 200 at\u00e9 mais de 1500 metros, as ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul possuem trechos que cortam \u00e1reas onde at\u00e9 mesmo as rodovias n\u00e3o podem alcan\u00e7ar. O maior exemplo \u00e9 a ponte de Cacequi, que por um bom tempo possu\u00eda o t\u00edtulo de maior ponte da Am\u00e9rica Latina. Pertence ao trecho Porto Alegre &#8211; Uruguaiana, foi constru\u00edda na d\u00e9cada de 30 e demonstra o potencial que essas pontes d\u00e3o para o transporte limpo e econ\u00f4mico que pode ser a ferrovia. Outras pontes das ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul s\u00e3o: Ponte do Canal de S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo &#8211; Pelotas, Ponte Ferrovi\u00e1ria do Barreto Triunfo, Ponte Ferrovi\u00e1ria do Rio Pelotas &#8211; Bom Jesus, Ponte Rodoferrovi\u00e1ria Brochado da Rocha &#8211; Mu\u00e7um, Ponte Rodoferrovi\u00e1ria de Marcelino Ramos, entre outras. Moderniza\u00e7\u00e3o das Ferrovias H\u00e1 alguns anos, desde a d\u00e9cada passada, existem algumas tentativas de tirar do papel o projeto de amplia\u00e7\u00e3o das ferrovias Norte-Sul, algo que seria do interesse do pa\u00eds inteiro visto as possibilidades de conex\u00e3o e moderniza\u00e7\u00e3o das cargas transportadas dentro e fora do pa\u00eds. Por\u00e9m, devido a dificuldades causadas pelo avan\u00e7o urbano, pelo bloqueio rodovi\u00e1rio e pelas privatiza\u00e7\u00f5es, existe uma incerteza a respeito de quando projetos como esse realmente ter\u00e3o um futuro concreto. Apesar da privatiza\u00e7\u00e3o dos trechos das ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul, adquiridas pela ALL (Am\u00e9rica Latina Log\u00edstica) e fundida em 2013 com a Rumo Log\u00edstica, e da opera\u00e7\u00e3o chama Rumo Malha Sul que tem concess\u00e3o para acontecer at\u00e9 2027, ainda n\u00e3o h\u00e1 um projeto concreto de estabiliza\u00e7\u00e3o dos trechos desativados, nem de um ampliamento aprovado que poderia definir novamente a infraestrutura do setor. Investimentos futuros nas ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul acabam dependendo tanto do setor privado que agora organiza sua situa\u00e7\u00e3o, como do governo e do Estado que precisa compreender a urg\u00eancia das concess\u00f5es e diminuir o monop\u00f3lio constrangedor das rodovias. O setor ferrovi\u00e1rio apresenta aumento de carga transportada, por\u00e9m, a cada ano passa por cortes e entraves. As concess\u00f5es federais que deveriam ajudar o sistema na verdade reduziram os trechos. Conclus\u00e3o A conclus\u00e3o que se chega da atual situa\u00e7\u00e3o das ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul \u00e9 que apesar de um ampliamento causado pelo setor privado, apesar de ser a ponte principal entre as bordas internacionais e nacionais do pa\u00eds, apesar dos diversos projetos de retomada da malha Norte-Sul, ainda h\u00e1 um grande descaso com as possibilidades desse meio de transporte dentro da economia brasileira. H\u00e1 ainda um conflito rodovi\u00e1rio que \u00e9 prejudicial ao sistema ferrovi\u00e1rio, talvez os trechos do estado sulista sob os projetos futuros da Rumo Malha Sul demonstrem como h\u00e1 algo inexplorado no que hoje, apesar de ser um meio de transporte esquecido entre os brasileiros comuns, ainda sim representa aproximadamente um d\u00e9cimo do transporte de carga (tanto rural como industrial) para o estado. As caracter\u00edsticas \u00fanicas das ferrovias ativas do Rio Grande do Sul como suas pontes que acessam \u00e1reas de dif\u00edcil contorno e sua antiga hist\u00f3ria de constru\u00e7\u00e3o patrimonial j\u00e1 deveriam ser exemplos suficientes para a exist\u00eancia e prolongamento do setor ferrovi\u00e1rio, mas como aponta a situa\u00e7\u00e3o econ\u00f4mica geral do pa\u00eds com seus problemas que v\u00e3o de escassez de combust\u00edvel at\u00e9 aumento do pre\u00e7o de produtos importados, talvez seja a hora do Estado finalmente entrar em acordo com um sistema de transporte desvalorizado e com alta capacidade de escoamento na produ\u00e7\u00e3o estadual e nacional.
